Oceanic Spreading Rates and Mid-Ocean Ridge Lengths for the last 140 million years
We have computed the age-area distribution of oceanic lithosphere, mid-ocean
ridge lengths, crustal production, and seafloor spreading rates since the
Early Cretaceous to address the mid-Cretaceous spreading pulse controversy. We follow the methodology of Müller et al. (2008b)
and the plate rotation model of Müller et al., 2008a; Steinberger
and Torsvik, 2008; Torsvik et al., 2008. Our approach differs from
previous studies primarily due to our detailed reconstruction of all known
ocean basins from the Early Cretaceous to present rather than a simple
extrapolation of the present day, which may provide misleading results.
