Introduction:
The East African Rift System is an area of much geologic interest, as it allows continental rifting and ocean basin formation to be studied in action. This report provides a brief introduction to the structures and more importantly how the system has evolved through time. It also considers the geodynamic forces at work in terms of the heat flow anomaly below the area - attributed to a mantle plume by many scientists. Finally we cover the case study of Lake Tanganyika - an analysis of a typical continental rift. |
