Palaeoclimate

I am involved in an ARC funded project on modelling the palaeoenvirnoment and palaeoclimate of the Southern Ocean during the past 40 million years. The project is headed by Dietmar Müller and John You.

Bathymetry and Topography Proxies

Modelling past climate conditions requires accurate bathymetry (for ocean circulation) and topography (for atmospheric circulation, precipitation) information. We are able to create a merged palaeo-bathymetry and topography grid for any time in the past. Our palaeo-bathymetry grids are created by computing depth to basement grids based on the age-depth relationship of Stein and Stein and also including a prediction of sediment thickness through time based on age of oceanic crust and latitude. Our palaeo-topography is based on present day topography with the elevation of the major mountain chains is based on known published elevation data. Our palaeo-bathymetry and palaeo-topography grid accounts for both tectonic, uplift, sealevel and glaciation changes.
