SW Pacific
The tectonic evolution of the SW Pacific was one of my first research projects, specifically examining the tectonic history of the back-arc basins. The evolution of the Tonga-Kemadec subduction system is of particular interest to many geodynamicists interested in the initiation and development of subduction.
SW Pacific Back-arc Basins
The SW Pacific consists of a series of back-arc basins namely the North Loyalty Basin, Norfolk Basin, South Fiji Basin, North Fiji Basin and the Lau Basin. The North Fiji Basin and Lau Basin are the only active back-arc basins and are quite well mapped and studied. However, the spreading history in the inactive back-arc basins was not well understood. I published a paper in the Australian Plate GSA Special Volume where I examined the spreading histories in the back-arc basins of the SW Pacific and linked this to the tectonic evolution of the entire region.
Enigmatic Norfolk Basin
I examined the tectonic evolution of the Norfolk Basin in light of new bathymetry, gravity and magnetic data from the FAUST2 cruise.

New Caledonia NOUCAPLAC1 Research Cruise
In August 2004, I was lucky enough to be invited on a research cruise to the SW Pacific on board the French ship R/V l'Atalante. The cruise was organised by IFREMER and NGS. We set sail from Noumea, New Caledonia and travelled southeast of New Caledonia into the South Fiji Basin and along the Loyalty Ridge. We arrived back in Noumea a few weeks later.
