Folder Contents: Rotationfile_Whittaker_etal_EPSL_sub.rot StaticPolys_Whittaker_etal_EPSL_sub.gpml DNSC08GRA_6m.gpml DNSC08GRA_6m.jpg The contents are designed for viewing within the GPlates plate reconstruction software. Gplates is free, open-source and works on windows, linux and mac, and can be downloaded from http://www.gplates.org/ or http://www.earthbyte.org/Resources/earthbyte_gplates.html Alternative files are also provided a) GMT compatible .xy format files with PLATES4 style header information b) ESRI shapefile .shp format (these load in GPlates) The following instructions are written for GPlates version 1.2 1) Load Files (File -> Open Feature Collection): Rotationfile_Whittaker_etal_EPSL_sub.rot StaticPolys_Whittaker_etal_EPSL_sub.gpml (OR StaticPolys_Whittaker_etal_EPSL_sub.shp) Global_EarthByte_GPlates_Coastlines_20111013.gpml Global_EarthByte_GPlates_PresentDay_COBs_20110610.gpml DNSC08GRA_6m.gpml (NB Other rasters can be loaded as jpgs - File -> Import Raster ) 2) Link static polygons to raster In the Layers window, expand the DNSC08GRA_6m layer (by clicking the small black arrow). Then click on 'Add new connection' and select StaticPolys_Whittaker_etal_EPSL_sub.gpml Note: When loading a shapefile, GPlates will prompt you to associate shapefile attributes with GPlates model properties. You just need to click OK. However, if loading your own shapefiles, you may need to ensure that the model properties are mapped correctly. Play around with the GPlates buttons to make an animation, select features, draw features, etc. For more information, read the GPlates manual which can be downloaded from www.gplates.org or http://www.earthbyte.org/Resources/earthbyte_gplates.html --------- File Details ------------ Rotation File: "RotationFile_Whittaker_etal_EPSL.rot" - rotation table containing finite rotations for Australia, Antarctica, India and micro-continents, plus the parent plates required to place these plates in moving hotspot (0-100 Ma) or true polar wander (100-200 Ma) reference frame GPML Files: "StaticPolys_Whittaker_etal_EPSL_sub.gpml" - Polygons defining the crustal geometries and age of the intervening oceanic crust between Australia, Antarctica and India used to create Figure 2. Raster: DNSC08GRA_6m.gpml DNSC08GRA_6m.jpg - Free Air Satellite Gravity model DNSC08. Reference: Andersen, O. B., P. Knudsen and P. Berry (2010) The DNSC08GRA global marine gravity field from double retracked satellite altimetry, Journal of Geodesy, Volume 84, Number 3, DOI: 10.1007/s00190-009-0355-9. Coastline and COB files are identical to those that ship with GPlates1.2.0. NB: To generate these files in other formats, you can load into GPlates and save out as GMT ASCII (.xy), PLATES format (.dat) or ESRI shapefile (.shp).
