Philippine Sea

The Philippine Sea is a very interesting region where there has been episodic back-arc basin formation, significant rotation of the Philippine Sea plate and subduction initiation along the Izu-Bonin-Mariana trench.

Philippine Sea Back-arc Basins

The Philippine Sea consists of the West Philippine Basin, the Parece Vela Basin, Shikoku Basin and the Mariana Trough. We examined the spreading history of the Shikoku and Parece Vela Basins as one system using updated gravity, magnetic and bathymetry data (Click here to download paper). We found that the fracture zones in the Parece Vela and Shikoku Basins track the rotation history of the Philippine Sea plate. We were able to map the rotation of the Philippine Sea plate independent of the palaeomagnetic data and were also able able to place more accurate constraints on the timing of Philippine Sea plate rotation from the seafloor spreading record.
